Patching Your Canvas Tent

Patching Your Canvas Tent

How to repair your canvas tent if it tears or gets holes from sparks/embers.

Snowtrekker recommends Bish’s tear mender glue for most uncomplicated repairs ie. tears and holes that have structural strong canvas to adhere a patch to. For complicated repairs Snowtrekker recommends taking your tent to a sewing repair shop familiar with canvas.

Below is a step-by-step process to complete a repair.

1.Measure the tear to make a patch 1 inch larger on all sides.

2. Use the measurements from step one to trace the patch with a pencil.

3. Use a pair of scissors to cut the patch out.

4.Place the patch over the tear or ember hole and lightly trace with a pencil.

5. Apply Bish’s to the patch and the tent inside the traced area and allow to get tacky before placing the patch over the tear.

6. After the Bish’s becomes tacky about 1 minute, on a flat surface place the patch on the traced area where the glue has been applied.  Use a heavier item to place as a weight on the patch to get the best adherence.

Snowtrekker recommends Gear Aid Tenacious Tape for emergency in field repairs.  It is also good to have for tears in sleeping bags, puffy coats etc.
